EDTV - This acronym stands for "Enhanced Definition Television." It refers to a complete products/system with at least a digital receiver display scanning format, and Dolby Surround Sound audio output capabilities.
Upconverting - Process by which a standard definition picture is changed to a simulated high-definition picture.
Bit Rate - The rate at which the data is transmitted, expressed as "bits per second" (bps). The higher the bit rate, the more data that is transmitted, generally resulting in better picture or sound quality. Video data rates are usually expressed as Megabits per second (Mbps, 106) and audio data rates in kilobits per second (kbps, 103).
Compression - A method of reducing the number of bits required to store or transmit programs by the removal of redundant and/or non-critical information in the digital picture and sound. The DTV broadcasting standard for Canada, uses the MPEG-2 video and the AC-3 audio compression coding. Compression allows the delivery of more programs in a single channel.
FTA - (Free To All MPEG-2 broadcasts) - The two most common digital schemes found on C-band and Ku band are 4DTV and FTA. FTA receivers are available to consumers, but there is effectively no regular HD programming.
DBS (direct broadcast satellites) - These satellites are powerful enough to be received by an 18 inch dish. They use Ku-band frequencies. Companies that provide DBS services to consumers in the U.S. are DirecTV and Dish Network. Canadian DBS providers are Star Choice and Bell ExpressVu. Also called DSS.
Must-carry - This refers to the legal obligation of cable companies to carry analog or digital signals of over-the-air local broadcasters.
