DVI - (Digital Visual Interface) - This connector conveys HDTV image scanning signals in binary data form. The data rate is very high (1.65 Gb/s). Binary data is preferred by monitors that are not CRTs. DVI comes with a decryption option called HDCP which will decode encrypted programs such as first-run movies.
VGA - a 5-wire standard interface, originally for computer monitors, now common for HDTV monitors. Usually the 5 wires are in one cable. The connector can be either a 15-pin connector or five BNC connectors. The signals are usually red, green, blue, horizontal sync, and vertical sync. But Y, Pr, and Pb can replace the colors.
Bit Rate - The rate at which the data is transmitted, expressed as "bits per second" (bps). The higher the bit rate, the more data that is transmitted, generally resulting in better picture or sound quality. Video data rates are usually expressed as Megabits per second (Mbps, 106) and audio data rates in kilobits per second (kbps, 103).
Aspect Ratio - A numerical expression of the relationship of width to height of a TV screen. 4:3 - This numerical sequence refers to the aspect ratio of the National Television Systems Committee (NTSC) TV screen, with "4" unit width corresponding to "3" unit height, proportionally, regardless of the actual size of the screen. 16:9 - This numerical sequence refers to the aspect ratio of wide screen DTV formats for all HDTV and some SDTV (Standard Definition) video. A "16" unit width corresponds to "9" unit height proportionally, regardless of the actual size of the screen. The widescreen 16:9 numerical sequence provides a viewing experience very similar to that of 35 mm movies.
S-Video Connection - A method to interconnect video devices (such as a DVD player and the analog television) by sending the two signals luminance (Y) and an encoded color difference signal (C). The S-Video connection is made using a cable terminated in a small 4-pin connector (in some cases a 7 pin connector is used on computers to allow inclusion of an NTSC composite signal). S-video can greatly improve the picture when connecting SDTV or NTSC displays to a high quality video source such as DVDs.
Multicasting - Term given to the sharing of the digital television channel among 2, 3, 4 or more individual programs and/or data services
Digital Television (DTV) - Digital TV is the umbrella term encompassing High-definition Television and several other applications, including Standard Definition Televison, datacasting, multicasting and interactivity.
