Component video. This 3-wire convention was created for connecting DVD players to TVs or monitors. It avoids downgrading the signal to NTSC. The signals may be RGB or YPrPb. Some HD STBs have only component video output.
SDTV - "Standard Definition Television." SDTV are based on 480 lines of vertical resolution and may have either 4 - 3 or 16 - 9 aspect ratios, and surround sound. Several SDTV programs are sent together to form the simulcast bundle. While SDTV pictures are of significantly better quality than NTSC, they are not up to the standard of HDTV.
Compression - Compression refers to the reduction of the size of digital data files by removing redundant and/or non-critical information ("data" being the elements of video, audio and other "information"). Digital TV in the U.S. would not be possible without compression.
NTSC - National Television Systems Committee. The organisation that created the standards for production and broadcasting of analog color television programming in Canada and the United States. The term is widely used to mean a composite analog television signal.
LFE - (Low Frequency Effects) - Sub-woofer. The 6th channel in a 5.1 channel system.
Progressive scan - This is the opposite of interlaced scan.
Sampling - This is the digital process by which analog information is measured, often millions of times per second, in order to convert analog to digital.
