Transponder - A satellite channel. There is often one program per transponder. Some transponders are wider than 6 MHz and can carry more than one NTSC program. Several digital channels can fit on one transponder.
First-surface mirror - Normal mirrors have the silvering on the back surface of the glass. First surface mirrors have it on the front.
SPDIF - (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) - This is digital audio, and can be either coaxial cable or fiber optic.
Enhanced TV - Also known as "datacasting." This term is used for certain digital on-air programming that includes additional resources downloaded to viewers. Some forms of enhanced TV allow live interaction; other forms are not visible on-screen until later recalled by viewers. Producers add these options to some digital programming to enhance program material -- allowing viewers the ability to download related program resources to specially equipped computers, cache boxes, set-top boxes, or DTV receivers.
Set-top box (STB) - A box, similar to the familiar cable box, that is capable of receiving, decoding and sending to the associated television the picture and sound of the selected DTV broadcast. The use of an STB would allow the use of conventional televisions to receive DTB programs, but at reduced levels of resolution and with imperfections due to aspect ratio differences, leading to letterboxing or cropping of the sides of the picture.
PSIP data - (Program and System Information Protocol) - This data is arranged as a table with multiple sub-tables. The data identifies the station name, what the sub-channels are, the program name, the following programs, content advisories, language options, and caption options. Some of this data is transmitted as often as 7 times per second.
Dolby Digital 2.0 - This is a two channel (stereo or Pro Logic) version of Dolby Digital. It is often used by DBS systems.
