NTSC - (National Television System Committee technical standard) - This is analog TV invented in 1946. NTSC has 525 lines (483 visible) interlaced, 60 fields per second. This standard is in use in North America, Japan, South Korea, Burma, Taiwan, the Philippines, and much of South America.
D/A - Conversion of digital signals to analog signals. Most set-top boxes decode the digital signals broadcast and then convert them to analog signal for interconnection to the display device.
8-VSB - Acronym for the transmission method used for over-the-air DTV broadcasting in Canada and the USA. Eight discreet amplitude level, "vestigial side-band" broadcast transmission technology. VSB is an analog modulation technique used to reduce the amount of spectrum needed to transmit information through cable TV, or terrestrial broadcasting.
Standard Definition TV Format (SDTV) - There are two main digital formats - HDTV and SDTV. SDTV typically does produce better quality images than that of traditional analog TV and pictures somewhat akin to digital cable. However, its images are not nearly as sharp as the images from the ultimate form of digital television _ High-definition TV (HDTV).
Raster - A group of closely-spaced lines whose brightness changes so as to appear to be an image.
Upconvert - The process which increases the number of pixels or frame rate used to represent an image by creating new pixels at closer spacing. For instance SDTV video having 720 x 480 pixels may be upconverted to 1280 x 720 pixels for use as HDTV. The upconversion process does not increase the resolution of image.
Must-carry - This refers to the legal obligation of cable companies to carry analog or digital signals of over-the-air local broadcasters.
