Downconvert - The process which reduces the number of pixels in the scanning format used to represent an image, so that it may be reproduced on a display of lower resolution, such as a conventional television. For example, an HDTV image may be downconverted to an SDTV or NTSC image, but in the conversion significant detail information may be lost.
DBS (direct broadcast satellites) - These satellites are powerful enough to be received by an 18 inch dish. They use Ku-band frequencies. Companies that provide DBS services to consumers in the U.S. are DirecTV and Dish Network. Canadian DBS providers are Star Choice and Bell ExpressVu. Also called DSS.
Codec - This term is short for "Coder-decoder." A codec is a device that converts analog video and audio signals into a digital format for transmission. It also converts received digital signals back into an analog format.
Composite video. This 1-wire standard contains all video information: intensity, color, and sync. The encoding is the same as NTSC, and thus has the "overlapping sideband" problem which sometimes causes wrong colors to appear.
Multicasting - The option to multicast was made possible by digital technology to allow each digital broadcast station to split its bit stream into 2, 3, 4 or more individual channels of programming and/or data services. (For example, on channel 7, you could watch 7-1, 7-2, 7-3 or 7-4.)
AACS - Advanced Access Control System. A computer specification for guarding next-generation optical-media content created by the film, electronics, and software industries.
MPEG-2 - Compression standards for moving images and for audio as set by Motion Pictures Expert Group (MPEG). MPEG-2 video coding is the basis for ATSC digital television transmission in the U.S and Canada.
