Must-carry - This refers to the legal obligation of cable companies to carry analog or digital signals of over-the-air local broadcasters.
HDTV - (High Definition TV) - A TV that displays 1280x720 pixels or better.
Channel - A 6 MHz (bandwidth) section of spectrum for over-the-air broadcast (channels 2 - 69) or in TV cable that carries one analog NTSC program or one or more DTV programs.
Compression - Compression refers to the reduction of the size of digital data files by removing redundant and/or non-critical information ("data" being the elements of video, audio and other "information"). Digital TV in the U.S. would not be possible without compression.
Sub-channels - OTA DTV stations can show multiple programs simultaneously, subject to the 6 MHz bandwidth limit. This is called multicasting.
Analog Video - The conventional NTSC television system in use today uses analog technology, in which the image sound and the picture brightness and color are represented by signals proportional to these values. The values of these signals are vulnerable to interference and noise. Digital television overcomes this vulnerability and delivers signals that are totally clean.
Progressive Scanning - A system of video scanning where lines of a picture are displayed consecutively (unlike interlaced).
