HDTV - "High-definition Television." This is the most superior video picture available in Digital TV. In the U.S., the 1080i and 720p formats in a 16:9 aspect ratio are the two acceptable HDTV formats. HDTV is a component of DTV.
Native format - Some DTVs will convert the 18 ATSC formats into 1 or 2 formats and will draw only those. For these sets, the `native' format is - 1. the formats the set will draw or - 2. the original format. (These are contradictory definitions, but they reflect current practice. 1 is probably the preferred meaning.)
Down Converting - Process by which a high-definition signal is converted to a standard definition picture.
NTSC - NTSC is the acronym that stands for National Television Systems Committee"and the name of the current analog transmission standard used in the U.S., which the committee created in 1953.
Letterbox - Letterbox refers to the image of a wide-screen picture on a standard 4:3 aspect ratio television screen, typically with black bars above and below. It is used to maintain the original aspect ratio of the original source (usually a theatrical motion picture of 16:9 aspect ratio or wider).
HAVi - (Home Audio Video Interoperability) - This is a standard for 1394 bus audio and video devices. It is software that is required for the units to talk to each other. HAVi allows plug-and-play recognition of devices, interoperability, and brand independence.
DVD - Digital Versatile Disk. An optical recording media similar to the familiar CD but having seven times its capacity on a single side. In television applications, DVD's are capable of carrying full-length commercial movies, plus additional material such as outtakes, director's notes, movie trailers, etc.
