DTH - Direct-to-Home satellite delivery. May also be called DBS or Direct broadcast satellite. In Canada, Bell ExpressVu and Star Choice provide DTH services in both HDTV and SDTV.
ATSC - (Advanced Television System Committee technical standard) - This is the name of the technology used by terrestrial digital TV stations in the U.S.
Metadata - Informational data about the data, included in a signal's data stream.
SECAM - (Sequential Color And Memory standard) - This alternative to NTSC has 625 lines interlaced, 50 fields per second. It is used in the former USSR, France, and parts of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
Interactive Television - TV programming with interactive content and enhancements, blending traditional TV viewing with the interactivity of a personal computer.
Multi-path interference - Some neighborhoods are plagued with this problem: - The signal finds more than one path to the antenna. Multi-path results from reflections off of buildings and diffraction around the sides of hills. For NTSC sets this will result in ghosts: multiple images shifted laterally. For DTVs the result can be an unusable signal, even though it may be strong. The solutions are moving the antenna or selecting a very directional antenna. Newer generations of DTV receivers are better able to cope with multi-path.
Enhanced TV - Also known as "datacasting." This term is used for certain digital on-air programming that includes additional resources downloaded to viewers. Some forms of enhanced TV allow live interaction; other forms are not visible on-screen until later recalled by viewers. Producers add these options to some digital programming to enhance program material -- allowing viewers the ability to download related program resources to specially equipped computers, cache boxes, set-top boxes, or DTV receivers.
